Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Denver

March 02, 2020

While you can find plenty of faux wood plantation shutters on the market in Denver, they all won’t age the same.  While some faux wood coverings will last forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood shutters will begin to degrade in just a few year’s time.

It can be tough to understand the pros and cons of the different faux wood plantation shutters Denver.  But once you know about the different varieties of faux wood, it will be much easier to tell which interior shutter will always look great.

The following list looks at the different varieties of faux wood shutters in Denver and orders them from the worst to the most durable and stylish:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some plantation shutters that use vinyl present themselves as faux wood.  But make no mistake, vinyl is not faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick veneer can be difficult to blend with a your decor, unlike some other faux wood or real wood shutters.  Vinyl may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products around, but you get what you pay for.

Vinyl is also damaged by heat. It’s not unusual to see vinyl shutters melt or discolor due to the sun’s rays. Because of their habit of warping or splintering and their poor insular nature, vinyl shutters won’t give much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if you have hollow louvers.

  • Benefits:

Least expensive of the non-wood shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Appears plastic; flimsy materials; hollow louvers; little energy efficiency; can quickly warp, chip or fade.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

An improvement from vinyl shutters are wrapped plantation shutters.  These coverings are constructed from pressed wood, wood chip materials, or glued MDF, and then wrapped with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The shutters are heavier and can appear much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their less durable counterparts.

Unfortunately, synthetic wrapped shutters have some problems. The pressed grain under the wrapping can be extremely absorbent, leaving the shutter exposed to humidity and moisture. It’s not unusual to find a warped or cracked louver or discover that the synthetic wrapping has split or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters cannot be custom-fitted for non-standard shaped windows like arches or ovals.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; may resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not great for high humidity or high moisture areas. Will take in moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; wrapping can chip away; warps or splits easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters created from solid extruded faux wood are more durable than all of the other non-wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic material infuse themselves throughout the shutter, they have more substantial, solid louvers that are more resistant warping.  You will also discover that these treatments last longer on average and will act much more like real wood plantation shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters are also able to be custom-made to fit any window shape and size -- even semi-circles.

But a solid extruded shutter is only as good as its faux wood formula.  Some mixtures create a fragile product, which can be broken by nails or screws during installation. If the faux wood composite doesn’t have a UV inhibitor, then your plantation shutter will fade and yellow over time. Some companies need to paint their shutters, which also brings about chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More substantial treatment that works like a hardwood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the formulation of the faux wood composite.

And Then You Have Polywood® Plantation Shutters

Polywood plantation shutters are constructed from an extremely durable extruded faux wood mixture that will never crack, warp, or yellow.  Its proprietary formula makes it seem like real wood, but with a material that repels moisture. We include a UV inhibitor with the faux wood formula so that the entire shutter will keep looking great for year after year.  They are even simple to clean -- just a duster for normal work, and a wet cloth for stubborn dirt.

Our Polywood shutters are also made to be one the most energy-efficient window treatments on the market.  In comparison, Polywood shutters are made to be 70% more energy-efficient than hardwood shutters, and 1600% more efficient than aluminum blinds. And these Polywood shutters are paired with a lifetime warranty.  Those are benefits no other shutter offers.

  • Benefits:

Lifetime warranty against warping, cracking or yellowing; most energy-efficient window treatment around; looks great in any style.

  • Drawbacks:

More expensive than flimsier vinyl interior shutters -- but worth it!
